Pin-Hole Camera

For this assignment I wanted to explore composition and better understand what the technical limitations of a pin-hole camera are. The lack of control over settings such as focal length was new to me. The first photo I took was primarily a test, but I still attempted to think about composition when setting up the camera and did my best to think about what I wanted the focal point to be. Unfortunately the focus on the camera is not great leading to somewhat blurry photos. I'm not sure if this is affected by using a smaller hole as an aperture, but this seems to be a likely explanation. I was surprised with the success of the first photo and so for the second I thought more about how I wanted the photo to be viewed and so I thought that a brick wall could be used as a focal point and it would contrast with the forest background. I attempted double exposure twice, both times I was the subject. The first double exposure I was much farther away from the camera so there is less detail, but it is still clear that it is the same person. The other double exposure I covered my eyes for part of the exposure so that there would be a transparent hand in the image in order to give it a more interesting and ghostly appearance. This image was also my self portrait. Overall I very much enjoyed the project, it was very interesting to develop photos for the first time. As someone who has worked almost exclusively with dslrs I'm very excited to explore shooting on film.
